How to be a Gender Explorer is a graphic narrative series about gender exploration and self discovery. The story is based on Samuel Luke’s personal experiences of being transgender, and uses themes of ‘transitional spaces’ and outer space to represent infinite and expanding possibilities of (gender) exploration.
The series also provides positive affirmations and validation to other Gender Explorers on similar journeys, to create awareness, understanding, and acceptance of being transgender.

Issue 2 of How to be a Gender Explorer brings us 40 new comic pages and a story that dives deeper into Samuel’s cosmic journey of gender exploration. Samuel navigates intimate topics such as chest binding, showering, public bathrooms, and longing to start his medical transition of hormones and top surgery. This issue validates any other gender explorers on similar journeys, especially anyone still waiting to transition.
This book is ultimately a time capsule of Samuel’s deepest feelings and fears during 2017, a year before he was able to start his medical transition.
